When I was in 5th grade I asked the teacher if I hooked a gasoline engine directly to a generator and started the gasoline engine couldn't I then shut off the gasoline engine  and run the generator from and electric motor hooked to the generator?

Teachers then were better educated.

She instantly replied that violates the conservation of energy and explained in limited detail to a 5th grader why and how.  She wasn't a science teacher.
