Back when I twisted wrenches for a living I replaced two of those old 5.7s with 403 gas engines. Made really nice pickups out of them.
I owned a 5.7 81 Chevy. I can't even remember what dealt it its death blow..........tranny or something like that. It got pretty dang good fuel mileage and ran cheap. Especially back in the day when it wasn't against the law to run farm diesel in them.
