Light line as mentioned 8-10# if you're going for blue gill / sun fish. I might even be inclined to break the barb off the hooks, just in case you want to toss a couple small ones back. I think it easier to get the hook out, especially when it's all the way down in the stomach it seems.

Hint: if you go to a pond that the fish are used to being fed, don't take a beer with you, it'll get warm while you're busy removing caught fish/baiting hooks. I might be speaking from experience.
