Faunsdale, AL | Small grain silage in general and wheat in particular…….
Cut at Boot stage for best relative feed value and protein which requires wilting it to get moisture correct
Soft dough stage for max dry matter yield per acre and maximum energy per acre at expense of digestibility and protein level. Sort of a substitute for corn silage and could be direct cut back in the day when a chopper was a small machine that might handle 8-10’ head pulled behind a 4020.
We chopped it to extend the feed for the dairy herd as we outgrew the silos we had. It often was not the best quality because of weather delays and always had a butyric acid smell that was hard to even wash off in the shower!
In between early boot and soft dough, the silage won’t be either high protein/highly digestible or high energy/high yield. Sometimes the weather causes you to chop it at less than either ideal stage.
