Too bad the government subsidizes corn and beans instead of fruits, vegetables and livestock. Me need more farmers like Mainefarmer. +1 Corn and beans also are almost guaranteed at least to not be a disaster. Crop insurance should be just that: purchased insurance and at realistic insurance market price. The way current insurance subsidies work, there is little real risk in corn and beans. Payments also tend go to the guys with the most acres, encouraging them to get even larger. If you can't get it all planted some years, no problem, just claim prevent plant. Agriculture get very distorted due to corn and bean insurance subsidies. Oh yes, China stops buying soybeans due to tariff war or corn down due to producing more than the markets can use??? No problem. Washington will come to the rescue with more $$$ for those patriotic, self-sufficient, independent,... corn and bean growers in red states. Plenty of dollars for corn and beans, just have to cut some more farm-to-school lunch programs. Or layoff some more national park rangers and IRS agents and close Social Security offices... |
