East Central Arkansas | Removing the attic insulation from a older home we are beginning to do some work on. I made a post a few weeks back about this. The main reason is to replace the electric wiring. I first thought I would be just removing a top layer that had been added later on. Realized I would need to remove a good bit of the original to get to wiring and ceiling boxes. After starting to handle and remove I decided it all was coming out. That stuff was old rockwool I guess with a paper facing on both sides. I guess that paper was supposed to hold it together. The paper just crumbles and it all falls apart. This was 16 inch material that had been cut 23 inches to lay between the ceiling joist. This did help for picking up and stuffing in 55 gallon bags. I have probably 4/5 removed. I spent a good bit of the day today removing from a couple close areas laying prostrate on some 1 x 6 boards removing this insulation. What a job getting that stuff in a bag and moving that bag around. Yes I am wearing a fullface respirator.
After the wiring gets done I will need to decide what I am going back with. This is the Midsouth so I know my needs won't be the same as Northern areas but also need insulation for the summer heat. I hope Kneedeep over in MS will have some recommendation on this. | |
