Too bad the government subsidizes corn and beans instead of fruits, vegetables and livestock.

Farmers grow what the market demands. The market hasn't demanded small grain or meats for many years. We were cow calf guys. It wasn't worth it to feed them all winter, lose sleep for two months, only to make $7000 on 150hd if you didn't bill any labor against them. It's not hard to figure out why over the last ten years 1,000+ HD of cows have left within 5 miles of me and it's probably closer to 5,000 in 20 years within 20 miles.
