And while Boone has a point, starting a herd, dollar cost averaging doesn’t work that well without some lower priced assets to start. With cattle prices where they are, a return to historical prices would make it hard to ever see those expensive cows turn a profit if you’re honest with the numbers.
That having been said, if you have other assets that are underutilized, such as pastures you can’t bale, and cover crops and stalks you can graze, then that makes them make a lot more sense.
Big picture, if you’re making or buying feed for them, borrowing money to buy them, or bidding high for pasture, any of these things would make it a hard no for me.
