MB, Canada | It's a pretty bad time to buy in but I'll admit I tend to ignore the market when it comes to building the herd I want.
Now if there was a group that could be considered "undervalued" in this market relative to the rest, I would be inclined to buy some yearling heifers to breed. In CDN dollars those girls are currently going for around $3k, so if you believe the market's going to remain high (which I do, short of a true black swan) then you can throw those heifers on grass, breed them, and potentially raise their value to $4k-$5k by fall. And if your nerves haven't gotten the better of you by then, you can calve them out next spring and end up with a $3k calf and a $5k bred cow by the next fall. And if they don't breed the first summer then you just sell them with a summer of relatively cheap gains on grass.
Either way I feel in this scenario you're always adding value rather than buying an expensive cow and hoping she maintains that value. More work for sure, but this is the sort of market that's going to reward folks who are willing to do what others aren't (like calving out a big pen of heifers). | |
