Driftless SW Wisconsin | I've had mostly terrible luck and wasted a lot of time buying females, either cows or heifers. The one exception being when I bought an Angus heifer from a local breeder. But even she wasn't really what I was looking for in a small-herd cow.
The cows I have been happiest with are all home raised. What I recommend for building a herd is to keep every heifer (unless one has a problem such as attitude) and focus on buying a good bull, even for a small herd.
Learn about EPDs and use them to find a good bull from a breeder who raises them like you do. This bull will be the foundation of your herd for a long time. | |
