Southeast Colorado | My father in law had surgery 2 years ago when he was 80 years old at the time. He was in a lot of pain and had numbness in random locations due to the pressure on his spinal cord. His surgery removed some of the bone inside his vertebrae where it was putting pressure on the spinal cord itself. He was told he'd have about a 6 week recovery and he admitted that it took about twice as long before he felt comfortable with any lifting, bending, or twisting. Before the surgery he was still fairly mobile...........but he and my wife's mother like to travel around the world.........and he had given up doing that, choosing to stay close to home due to ongoing pain and the limitations associated with that. They were just here for 3 days for a visit...........and he's doing substantially better. He walks around very cautiously...........especially around stairs. He said he could do it now without pain..........but at 82 years old he didn't want to make any mistakes.
My neighbor and good friend is a little over 10 years younger than my father in law. He is still a school teacher........but is set to retire at the end of this month. He too was in quite a bit of pain.............but kept working through it until he had his surgery last summer (while school was out). Today he's doing great............other than a shoulder that's getting reconstructed this coming August.
