Fruita CO | My dad & uncle called it "needlegrass". It was a scourge in the mountain area where I grew up, it would eventually take over an alfalfa field...nobody sprayed in those days, nothing to do but plow it out & replant alfalfa...actually, irrigated it would make OK hay if cut early, before it started to turn. Once it starts to turn purple it's no good. The mature seeds are bad about causing eye & jaw abcesses in cattle...
Edit: They did run a spring-tooth harrow over the hayfields to tear out the cheat grass early...
