NW Indiana | R^2 is a measure of how well the line fits the data points, it is not prediction of what the next data point will be. It is basically saying how far away are the data points are away from the line. You could drop 1983,1988, 2012 from below the line and drop 1992,2004,2009 on the high side while still maintaining the same line but having a much better R^2. It has absolutely nothing to do with saying if the next point will be above or below the line but rather a measure of how close the next data point is likely to be to the line.
