| I am thinking of a big change to my farming career. I farm 530 acres of corn and soybeans in central illinois. I have a full time job in ag seed production company, so my busy season coincide with each other's. I have been doing this for the last 30 years, I am 54 years old. I'm the 6th generation of my family to farm, so there is a lot of sentimental ties. My family farm owns 320 acres, I am paying on 40 acres of my own and rent an 80 from my elderly neighbor. I'm also currently custom farming another 130 acres.
My equipment is getting some age on it. My repair bills are manageable for now but seems like every year gets higher. Not in the budget to do many up grades on equipment. I've been trying to keep up with technology advancement but getting very expensive for ROI.
I have been renting a shop/shed from my ex-wife, which has been working fine. She is wanting to sell so will lose that option. I have been looking in to building a shed/fabric building. This is another part of my questioning of my future.
I have been contemplating asking a friend if he would consider forming some sort of a partnership, or custom farm arrangement. That way I could still have control of the family owned ground and benefits of newer technology.
I would like to hear from Ag Talkers suggestions would be. If any of you have had experiences with partnerships and how they worked out.
Thank you.
