Frost,Mn | Sometimes your posts really have me scratching my head, your whole department needs to have training, not just you. How does the department even have any type of work comp or liability insurance? Unless you’re just a bunch of cowboys putting out brush fires you really have no clue knowing how to handle a structure fire and even something as simple as ventilation and how to use a hose stream to clear smoke out a window. The knowledge of putting on an airpack for a car fire because the toxins and carcinogens from the plastic and interior are harmful or now knowing how harmful the foam we sprayed for years was not good for us. What we do is if someone wants to join the department they have to be approved, insured, then carry a pager for at least 6 months to be sure it’s what they expected. They are in no way on the end of a hose but they help guys put on air packs, roll hose, and dump tankers, etc. We make them have firefighter 1 at minimum but encourage 2 and hazmat because then the state will reimburse us for the training. This is for a small district with 23 members and fortunately a young group too. | |
