-40% is a lot higher number than I would have expected, and it is sad. Perhaps that was unique to the group or geographic area of the sample.
Could be financial obligations, family dynamics, too much of life invested into the farm to walk away without sticking it out to see if things get better, not knowing anything different & fear of the unknown, something else missing in life?
Maybe it was simply answered by some in terms of ease of entry and exit from the farming occupation not being as simple as quitting one job and getting another.
