North Central Illinois | My experience with Canada thistle is that, while some treatments are consistently effective, others vary wildly. I've seen plowing and frost seeding clover both be moderately suppressive, or of minimal impact depending on the year. My thickest thistle patch ever was in a clover stand that I kept for a few years for grazing.
This year I'm seeing less thistle shoots than expected in my worst field (except for one patch that's about what I expected). I had soybeans there last year and hired a crew to hoe all the thistle shoots out of the rows after each cultivation. That appears to have helped a lot. | |
