Texas | I know for sure at 58 there is no way I could do some of the things guys like my son do .
The things they do are on the order of what I’d call extreme . Things like climbing 100 foot areal truck , full gear on air at 100 degrees - not counting the fire . Carry the ladder set up and get in second story window again 100 degrees full gear .
When he was in school I believe he said the runs were 6 miles a day , hundreds of pushups . Then put your gear on and fight a fire , drag hoses etc .
Son did a smart thing when he was in EMT school he asked some of the guys in fire how hard it was and what they did . He did not have any turnout gear . But he immediately started running and hitting the workouts harder than ever . He was ready on day 1. My cheif knows a lot of people being in fire service a long time . He knew about sons school and several of the instructors. Cheif said it’s designed to be as similar to marine boot camp as possible . I don’t know how many know this but a lot of guys get in firefighting after military .
Yes , lots and lots quit , some can’t take the yelling that’s about constant , some won’t buckle down and study and pass that , the physical endurance parts send a lot home ,
Some can’t handle the real world ambulance. Ambulance is in EMT school .Son said “Burn school” sent a bunch home . They get in a real fire and freak out , use all their air and really freak out . He said some quit the fire and left him by himself . He got in trouble for violating the 2 in 2 out rule . 2 FF in the structure 2 FF outside . He was on the nozzle he said they screamed at him a solid 5 minutes . He said dad I believe they got their point across .
