Virginia, Northern Neck | I have learned to not depend on vehicle USB ports for charging anything, for all the reasons listed above.
I buy "cigarette lighter sockets" online for a couple of dollars each (they even ship with mounting brackets) and wire them directly to the battery with a fuse.
I also buy USB "lighter socket" charging adapters for a couple of dollars each, most of them now have 2 levels of charge, and a built-in digital volt meter.
I have installed those on almost everything we own, and everything (phones, laptops, tablets, power banks) charge really fast.
I unplug the charging adapters from the lighter socket when not in use.
I don't leave them in all the time because they do draw current, and might could burn if something went wrong.
