Subject: What variety name?

In general, blueberries are very shallow rooted and need constant moisture replenishment. Do not let it dry out, but do not flood the plant either as most are very suseptible to root disease. Water management should be your number one priority.

Usually the first year after planting, a common practice is to pull the blossoms off and not let the plant produce fruit.

Most pruning is done after leaf drop, but in a production field, some folks do a specific sort of pruning using the human fingers and snapping off the tips of a couple branches to spur new growth in that area. Otherwise, dormant pruning is simply removing dead wood and shaping the plant to keep the fruit off the ground.

Blueberries like a mulched bed. Most use sawdust, but other medium is used too in different areas. Try to stay away from sawdust containing cedar as the tannins in the cedar are usually deadly to the blueberry.

Your local nurseries and chem/fert dealers should have an idea of what your are soils need for nutrients. Usually some sort of multi spectrum fert is used with N and S being priority in the spring. The blueberry does need to go dormant, so later fertilizer application needs to be looked at. In my area the fertilizer is applied in march and april, then no more, or if our tissue tests show we need a bit more, we will do a foliar application of fertilizer, but that is for a production field.

Blueberries to prefer full sun. Birds love blueberries and a lot of folks will put netting over the plants that allow bees through, but not birds. After fruit has been harvested, try to pickup most of the berries from the soil around the shrubs and dispose of. This practice is to reduce the chances of fungal diseases like mummy berry. Link to a bit about mummy berry.

Good luck in your new adventure. Blueberries are a great fruit with a lot of potential like drying and freezing. Blueberry smoothies are some great stuff.
