Subject: RE: Cattle Mineral Safe for Horses

North central TX
We have a pair of jennys that run with our cows. They have never bothered the calves. They have stomped a stray dog or three to death though. I've always heard the jacks were aggressive enough that some of them will get after baby calves, but don't have any first hand experience with them.

I usually put out mineral and salt blocks for my cows. Can't say I've ever seen the horse or donkeys eating on them. Don't know about loose mineral though. Frankly, I think most of the "precautions" that people claim you need to take with equines is over hyped. Our mare runs with the cows 365 days a year and eats 20% range cubes regularly. Before she ran with the cows/like the cows, she had a propensity to colic. Since we quit treating her like a horse, she hasnt had a single episode.
