Central Kansas | Maybe another ACE inhibitor, Vasotec (enalapril)? Angiotensin converting enzymes. They are very good at preventing hardening of arteries and when coupled with a cheap diuretic, are very good at lowering blood pressure. The action of ACE inhibitors result in a chemical irritant to lungs in some people. 1-4% of patients can experience the dry cough, which has no treatment other than switching drugs. Some studies have indicated the dry cough in up to 35% of patients, but these included a high percentage of females, known to have reported the dry cough symptom more than males.
ACE inhibitors are very good at lowering blood pressure with very few side effects other than the cough, and are much less expensive than more modern medications. Dry cough with them tends to be somewhat akin to muscle pain with statins….often reported more frequently than datum reflects. Almost like you know it’s going to happen…so it does! Hope you do well with lisinopril….but for certain, a Dx of hypertension and subsequent treatment is the real win here. | |
