I keep hearing about how expensive tires are for fire trucks, really, is that such a major problem to deal with? Yeah it sucks that the fire trucks don't drive enough miles to wear their tires out, but it's no different than for a big RV that sits most of the year. If you can't have tire problems, then you'll have to replace the tires after a set number of years whether they look like new or not. Compared to the rest of the operating costs of a fire truck I doubt the cost of new tires every 5 years would be that significant.

Fullsize trucks need 12R-22.5 tires to carry the weight. Most single axle trucks are weighing close to 50k, tandems are over 60k, and a fully-loaded quint can be closer to 70k. Have you ever priced 12R rubber? Also, when the tires sit loaded like that constantly, they are suspect after about 5 years.
