People name-call or deflect during arguments when they can't support their side because they feel threatened, lack strong evidence, or are emotionally invested in their position. These behaviors often stem from bias or from wanting to protect their ego. Name-calling shifts focus to personal attacks, while deflection avoids confronting weak arguments. Both are easier than admitting uncertainty or researching further.
Diverse opinions on complex issues only lead to a better understanding of the problem at hand.
