Malta, Illinois | I share your concerns. 50 years ago a lot of rural fire protection districts were woefully under equipped with ancient and marginally functional equipment. I think this was much less prevalent with municipalities and cities although I am sure it was a concern for them as well. 50 years later the pendulum has swung way far in the other direction. Most every department around here has very modern and expensive equipment which has been paid for with government grants and tax dollars. I want our fire departments to have good, reliable, and safe equipment. I do not believe you need the latest and most expensive equipment to do that. Surely pumps and other aspects of these rigs can rebuilt to meet the specifications that are in place? If not, maybe the specifications need to be changed. There is absolutely no reason that 30 year old trucks cannot be reliable for some fire departments. What is more important is the men in those trucks and the equipment they carry. I am always happy to donate to the fire protection district when they are raising money for new gear or equipment that they can use to save lives or make their jobs easier. Trucks that cost over a million dollars are another matter. Completely unnecessary in my opinion. | |
