I was figuring at $4 lb. hanging weight should equal about the same money on hoof for a 750 lb. steer @ $2.50 lb. at the stockyard. Buyer is a good friend, steer is running with a young herd bull and it will not be hanging around here after the bull is turned in with a cow herd.

I dont mean this to sound offensive in any way but I think I'd just send the calf to the sale barn and take your check. Maybe help your friend find a good finished steer from another neighbor. I butchered one about that size due to a broken leg. While the meat was good there just wasn't much there and the steaks were very small. I think it will end up being a lot of money invested for him without a lot of return.

No offense taken, but we have had around one beef this size done about every other year for around 30 years now, steaks don't completely fill a plate but they are very good. Don't expect to make money by doing this beef, but I will eat well, know what I'm eating and I don't mind sharing with a good friend. Some folks from corn country don't realize that steers are not finished in some areas of the country, including my area, it would be real hard to turn a profit here since there's no cheap corn to be had by the time you add a long haul trucking bill to it.
