Cen Ks | Calcium nitrate has some possibilities...except its $$$ Back in the 80s or 90s K-State had some research on calcium nitrate. If I recall correctly they were comparing a 1/3 calcium nitrate & 2/3 UAN solution against a straight UAN solution as a nitrogen source on winter wheat. The results looked good till we found out what the calcium nitrate was going to add to the fertilizer bill.
I asked one of the agronomists on the project about the experiment. It sounded as if a private company was funding the research, Like maybe they thought they were going to re-invent the wheel on some new product(?) As far as K-State's involvement in the project went it was just a one time deal for a third party.
We run Ammonium Thiosulfate (ATS) with our UAN on wheat. Calcium nitrate has a limited number of products it will mix with. Unfortunately it will NOT mix with ATS.
I would like to hear from any wheat growers that are using calcium nitrate on winter wheat. The science behind adding a calcium source with N is pretty strait forward. Are there other extension research projects out there?
