It is a struggle to get people to pay for 1/2's. I took the steers from last year at 700# live to the auction and sold them as it wasn't worth the extra time and feed to piss with selling 1/2's with the market where it is and the potential downturn we decided to take a profit and move on.
Here it is $200 to kill, $0.85# hanging to process so a 800# hanging wt calf costs $3392 once processed or $1696 for a half. Just fewer families who have that cash laying around.
January was a horrible time to have some ready as all were broke from xmas and property taxes that were all due in December.
March/April was better.
packaging it out retail is a pain in the butt as well.
If it wasn't for the work ethic ect it teaches the boys it wouldn't be worth messing with. | |
