Pittsburg, Kansas | I can fully understand that and I have been in the position many years ago where money did not grow on trees. I have always tried to leave tips for wait staff but sometimes it was pretty scarce when we saved money just so we could afford a "date night" every couple weeks.
After retiring about five years ago now and selling out our farm equipment and paying off all debts we are quite a bit better off than we were forty years ago. I made the conscious decision two or three years ago I was going to become more generous. I now leave tips way more generous than I ever did when we were in the struggling years. There are so many people unwilling to work I figure I better take care of those that choose to serve me. I try to put more in the pot for the Salvation Army at Christmas than I ever did. We can afford it now so giving the Girl Scouts a little isn't going to change our lifestyle nor cause us to miss out on something else.
Just using up a tiny bit of our kids inheritance by being a little more generous than what we could afford earlier in life. I don't expect it of those who can not afford to do so, but those of us who can should be generous to others. At least that is the way I feel about myself. |
