I saw some corn that was planted in 30" rows with an air seeder ~25 years ago. It was in northern Iowa, not exactly in small grains country. I think they actually bought the air seeder for the purpose of trying to plant beans with it but wanted to see if it could do an acceptable job on corn as well. From what I remember, it wasn't a complete failure but it wasn't really a success either. As one can imagine, the spacing was pretty bad.
Luckily that was before they would have had a 20/20 monitor in the cab telling them how many $1000's they were losing due to the poor spacing. Of course corn was sub $2 then so it would have been hard to lose $1000/acre due to bad spacing since $400/acre was a pretty dang good gross at the time.
