Maybe the difference is that almost nobody applies pre plant nitrogen here. As you said it disappears. 90% of N is applied either at planting or post plant pre emerge. The remaining 10 still use anhydrous which is almost always applied in the fall. I don't care what form of N someone uses. If they apply it so it won't leach away.
As for the Lime neutralization of different N forms. My text looks must be out of date because. My fertilizer books still show uan being 10-15% less acid at the same nitrogen value due to the nitrate portion not having free hydrogen. 10% over decades adds up.
