UAN increases microbial activity and enhanced breakdown of residues in no till crops. It basically does what the BW fusion boys want you to pay extra for. NH3 applied in late fall does not harm the soil IMO, but it does not provide corn with early N and residue breakdown. That residue provides a field sprayed with UAN a lot of N,P,K late season. That's why you can use less and still yield with NH3. UAN is terrible in a COC application because it will absolutely get tied up in the corn residue if its surface applied. CEC is largely what will determine what you can get away with anyway
