southern MN | I do a very very small scale of that, basically I move some organic matter from my swamp that dries enough to bale most years to a lighter soil hillside that I row crop. Let the cattle graze it, drop a few dozen bales out over winter on a 40 acre field. Let them poke through the bales and bed down on them over winter.
Over the years it does help my crop field. Year to year I think it would be too much fuss and some of those difficulties for most to bother with.
I try to alternate disking and field cultivating the piles in early spring every week and get the mess spread out. Disk won’t cut through my tough grass residue, field cultivator will bunch it up and plug - but if you work with it a bit the cultivator will tear it into smaller bunches and then the disk will cut it up.
If they bedded on the pile it can break down pretty nicely - then you might see a salt circle tho. It’s certainly not a perfect situation. I enjoy the results but I wouldnt recommend it to everyone for sure.
