South Central MN
Only reason I went away from NH3 was it being fall applied N and I changed to planter applied/sidedress. Most is applied with a chisel plow in the fall here.
Have done sidedress NH3 in the past, worked fine (other than maybe some crispy leaves now and then and the pungent smell.) but now with a 12 row planter I have a liquid bar to match. In this part those sidedress NH3 rigs were all 8 row 30". Haven't used any coated urea here since I went for less tillage and don't like topdress since you can't always get a perfect spread pattern. The coating might come with issues later if it doesn't break down.

For your neighbors the bigger issue is the high levels of tillage and no cover if you are just looking at erosion, the NH3 just happens to be a convenient form of N that is priced fair for cents per unit of N.

Biased salesmen or users of a certain method are people who don't like straying outside their comfort zone. Sales people usually have a vested interest in what they are selling, not many are very open to something different.
