Subject: RE: cow calf seperation

West Central Illinois
I wean replacement heifers in December then feed them separately from the calves I wean that are getting sold which get grain and separate from the cow herd which mostly gets 1st cutting hay. I feed the replacement heifers nothing but good 2nd cutting grass all winter until early April I reunite them with the cow herd when they start calving so they can learn to be cows. Haven't had a problem with them sucking their mom with their new calf yet. I caught one try it the other day but was very pleased when the mom delivered a swift kick and an angry beller at her yearling daughter from last year.
