Third year using my new Harvest International planter. It has hydraulic downforce and all the bells and whistles. Years 2023 and 2024 the no-till ground was dry on top and very firm. I planted with medium to heavy down force to get a stand. Corn came up fairly well and yielded above our usual averages here in dry south central Kansas.
This year I set the depth the same and started with medium downforce, going to lighter down force in later fields. We had fabulous moistire and the corn went in great. I dug around a few times and though my 2- 2 1/4 depth looked okay. We had nice rains the next week and the corn came up very slow. After digging around most of the corn was at 2 1/2 inches deep, not a bad thing if it all comes up. Before the rain I was seeing sidewall compaction, which I rarely seem to have. I think the rains saved my stand.
Should have planted most of the fields at minimum downforce with the good loisture we had.
I know we are far apart but i have looked at research from all over. Corn has no ill effect planted up to 3" deep. I aim for 2.5 on corn and beans on 30". It takes an extra day to come out of the ground but at that depth it all comes out the same day due to consistent moisture at the seed. |
