South Central Kansas | Third year using my new Harvest International planter. It has hydraulic downforce and all the bells and whistles. Years 2023 and 2024 the no-till ground was dry on top and very firm. I planted with medium to heavy down force to get a stand. Corn came up fairly well and yielded above our usual averages here in dry south central Kansas.
This year I set the depth the same and started with medium downforce, going to lighter down force in later fields. We had fabulous moistire and the corn went in great. I dug around a few times and though my 2- 2 1/4 depth looked okay. We had nice rains the next week and the corn came up very slow. After digging around most of the corn was at 2 1/2 inches deep, not a bad thing if it all comes up. Before the rain I was seeing sidewall compaction, which I rarely seem to have. I think the rains saved my stand.
Should have planted most of the fields at minimum downforce with the good loisture we had.
