North Central Illinois | Agreed, though a lot depends on the field conditions prior to seeding the rye. Rye no till drilled into bean stubble is smoother and has a lot less dirt in the cutterbar than rye broadcast and disked into corn stalks.
I've only used a sickle haybine, but rye cuts pretty similarly to oats at a similar growth stage.
By late May, rye will be 4-5' tall and quite course. I always cut mine in early May just at the first sign of heads emerging. | |
