I had a neighbor pull a old IH 4 row planter out of the weeds years ago. He never looked how the former owner had it set. He went around a 10 acre field twice and planted 3 bags of seed.

This was years ago, but my neighbor asked another neighbor the best way to plant a field going to corn as he apparently didn't have much prior experience, and the advice was to start by going all the way around the field first to get his end rows done. Well, he did that, but then continued around an around an around and this wasn't a rectangular type of field, instead back in rougher irregular field type country but not a crazy shape field by any means ......................... usually.
The guy doing the planting was also a math teacher at the local HS, and you'd have to think as the rounds got smaller and tighter surely he was questioning if this was really the way to do it. Just driving down the road you'd think one would pick up some pointers as he lived in farm country. Heck, if he ever looked out his windows he'd have seen corn fields right next to him for many years prior, and was raised on a farm in Missouri, but I think was more of a livestock type farm. Anyway, I know it got combined the next spring by mainly going at a 90 degree to the rows and surely any spraying done the year before was done similarly.
