Farmington, Mo | We have some rented tall fescue hay fields that have a very bad infestation of Johnson grass. I’m sure some will say it makes great forage, but we don’t want to be dragging it back home to our pastures and it gets so rank so quickly in the summer it’s beyond manageable.
I found this herbicide that is labeled for Johnson grass control in established tall fescue called Outrider. Herald is another brand…sulfosulfuron is the AI.
My thoughts on timing would be to mow the fields for hay in early June like normal then spray after 2-3 weeks of regrowth. Johnson grass will out grow the fescue that time of year which should maximize control and minimize turf damage but I have no experience.
