North Central KS | Last June I had milo that we planted with our planter get eaten off by chinch bugs. So when I showed up after wheat harvest to drill a neighboring field with cover crops I decided to try drilling the milo on 7.5” rows.
We were putting on 52k seeds which is approximately 4lbs. I had in the coarse meters and after calibrating tried it. It did work but the 700 monitor was not happy because it couldn’t register such small amount of seed coming out. You couldn’t even see the meters turn because they were going so slow. I bumped the rate up to 5-6lbs to get a little more volume.
All in all it worked. I had 90 bushel milo on 7.5” rows and it was not a failure with the wrong meters. However the monitor not shutting up was really annoying. I wondered if you switched to 15” rows if the monitor would register the seed better on the row sensors and it wouldn’t be so upset. I only planted 16 acres like this but it did work in a pinch. Nothing beats a 500T case air seeder. | |
