| Based on comments from and books written by those close to him, he seems addicted to the image of being a strongman and gets visibly irritated when the news isn’t focused on him. It’s possible that this is the only reason he gets out of bed: by being both the cause and the supposed solution to global chaos, he keeps power in his hands and ensures his name stays in the spotlight. His supporters don't care about anything unless it impacts them directly, so he’ll keep winging it until either his approval rating drops sharply or another major force, like the bond market, forces him to change course.
In other words: the world's biggest narcissist. It's a dangerous but exploitable character trait that foreign diplomats will factor into every strategic calculation going forward.
While even his staunchest followers see his questionable traits, they are trapped in tribal loyalty that ensures they'll support him simply because they've sworn never to back "the enemy", a perfect illustration of how a two-party system degrades into identity politics over actual governance. So the approval rating won't reel him in. It's up to the markets now.
