Yes, despite what populist narratives suggest, there are many more economic tools available during trade negotiations. That’s why anyone with a basic understanding of international trade sees Trump’s approach as deeply flawed, to the point they’re practically shouting it from the rooftops. You can’t renegotiate trade deals with the entire world in 90 days. At best, you end up with some vague memorandums and lofty intentions.

Trump has succeeded in lowering the value of the dollar but since a single trade deal with one country can take months or years.. it’s hard to take his tariff ultimatums seriously.. to the point of whether he can enhance the US position or lose it?
what happens on the margin is what matters.
The tide has flowed out.. not as much (yet) as feared.. but greater Risks still remain.. Trumps capitulation without gains are witness to this.
So what is the real goal?
