South Central IA | In this phase of life I wouldn't do that, I save way too much buying chemicals here and there and handling the details on the farm. Doing it the way I do it earns me a lot of money and I do mean earn. It's not easy money, you're trading sweat for dollars.
Now that said, hustling chemical around is hard work or very expensive if you want easy handling. Most guys with your acres are probably somewhere in between. In 10 years I could see myself doing that even if it cost a bit more.
Are you / do you have cheap labor that tolerates getting covered in chemicals, busting jugs, trying to run three pumps at once and make 100 trips a day up the ladder and in and out of the sprayer? If yes (describes me) then keep that money in your pocket and do it yourself. If you're one man show and don't want bogged down in the labor and details, I think it sounds like a great idea.
