It’s been a long time since high school government class but am I wrong in thinking that due process is a right that you get by being a US citizen? As in if you are not a citizen and here illegally then sorry about your luck?

I think most everyone can agree that people should have due process, but I think that what people disagree on is how much process is due.

For example, if you’re in a car coming across the border, when you pull up to the guard station, they ask you for some items. They review those items, ask a few questions, and decide on the spot whether to turn you away or let you in. That is the process that you are due. Minutes by one person. Everyone seems to agree about that, thousands of people go through that process daily.

What I don’t understand is why some people think that if they manage to get past the guard shack they’re due so much more. They want courts, free lawyers, time, money, etc. The process they are due is to have their paperwork checked and determine to see if they’re allowed here or not. It should take minutes by one person, just like all the law abiding people at the border get.
