Subject: Stubborn Heifer Nursing Calf

West Central Illinois
Haven't calved out too many heifers but this I haven't had to deal with yet. Heifer calved last night on pasture, claims calf, cleaned them off etc. Watching calf try to nurse this morning the Heifer doesn't completely kick at it but kind of rotates around a step at a time when calf tries to nurse. Occasional a hoof stomp so calf unlatches. Finally had enough watching the calf got a sip at a time I ran her back through the last 2 paddocks 300 yd away to barn amd locked her up in small pen I use to crowd calves up to my alley. Maybe 8x10' at best in size. I've watched calf nurse pretty good now if I'm right there calf has got her fill twice now. Later this afternoon I watched from a distance and she was kind of doing the same thing again. How long is reasonable to keep her penned up o bond better with calf? What are the chances she does it next year if this turns out ok? I did have to pull the calf and move it from where she had it last night, it was a bad spot on the edge of steep bank in the timber. Calf was out head first and breathing when I showed up so she probably would've gotten the rest without intervening but hate to see calf halfway out like that even though it's breathing.
