| Possibly true the right tends toward a more black and white understanding. This would be showed when we look at USAID. The right sees it as numbers on a page we can get rid of. The left sees it as humanitarianism that’s probably the “right” thing to do as a rich country and pays us back in other ways if not strictly monetary.
As far as the parade thing, you’re free to start a parade for whatever cause you want, I doubt you or I will be doing that soon. The idea isn’t that they’re better and deserve better treatment, it’s just visibility and acceptance that it’s ok since for most of our history you’d be beaten or killed for being gay and probably still bullied in most places today.
I think most on the left right now are worried about a slippery slope into the lgbt stuff after the attacks on trans people. Much like folks on the right feel the same about not giving an inch on 2nd amendment stuff.
No reasonable person thinks you’re a bad person for being indifferent about gay people. I think the same way. The issue comes with
1) is that truly your position, or do you find it disgusting and wish it were outlawed but being indifferent is the most socially acceptable position you’re willing to stake (get 6 or 7 beers in a conservative and he’ll tell you how he really feels about gays and immigrants lol)
2) supporting candidates or policies that actively seek to discriminate against whatever group of people, then being surprised that group is disgusted by you.
Example: you vote for the nazi party in 1930 Germany. You genuinely have no problem with Jews, but you really like the nazis powerful speeches and economic plans. You don’t pay attention to the Jew stuff because you don’t really care about them more than anyone else, you don’t even know any Jews, and they aren’t gonna do that stuff anyway - but something had to be done about this economy and adolf can fix it. Fast forward a few years, the Jews are gonna think you’re a pretty bad guy when you tell them who you voted for, even if you say “but I didn’t support them on that!!”
That’s genuinely just an example of the thought process, I’m not trying to sneakily equivocate that to trump. | |
