| I always try to find the reason behind every mechanical failure by "reading" the failed component itself. When dealing with a bearing, I question what part failed first? ...seal, cage, race? What is the nature of the failure? ...wear, stress, corrosion, contamination, lack of service, damage, bad engineering etc. Reading those clues will usually tell the story of what happened. Exactly what style of bearing are we dealing with here? I am going to assume it is the typical triple-lipped tillage bearing.
A rolling basket bearing failure on a shed'd unit would have me initially suspect either a setup or service problem. On the setup side, make sure there is no axial-thrust forces being placed on the assembled unit. For the service side of things, tillage-type bearings are usually operated with a 100% grease fill and have a grease purging requirement. Are the bearing units fully filled and is grease being purged through both seals?
