north central Iowa, Hampton | my kitchen is a little older, so still halogens under the counter, but I use them a lot, especially as the eyes age.
It's not fancy, but I have formica counters on a masonite type base, with an edge band of wood that matches my cabinets. They're durable, low cost, maintenance free, I like the look and I can replace / remodel change colors much more easily than changing stone counters. The only real disadvantage I've seen is that it's not practical to have an underhung sink.
