Iowa | That's a great book title... sometimes could be a good reminder.
I also met my wife through a dating service that started before the internet got to be popular. There were not many single women my age around here when I came back to the farm during the 1980's. Most of the women my age were married to their high school sweethearts or they'd left for greener pastures. I could go for years without even meeting a single woman my own age, and did not have much opportunity to get away from the farm due to issues with an elderly parent. Just about any date I had for nearly 20 years was some sort of blind date, and even those were few and far between. They were not all terrible, but none seemed to be a match until I met my wife.
She was about my age and left rural Iowa along with some family and friends to find employment during the farm crisis of the 80's. They moved back to Iowa several years later. She wanted to meet me at the Dairy Queen in my home town because she knew where that was. We got some ice cream there and ate it at park a few miles out of town. I took her back to the farm and showed her around. She looked through old high school year books and a few photo albums. We continued to date. She came from a very enjoyable family. They lived within reasonable driving distance, so our activities soon centered around a lot of her family events. One night she watched me force a manual adjustment to the corn dryer when the electronic metering control failed. She was not very mechanically inclined and easily got the impression I was some sort of genius worthy of her consideration. Although she had a few quirks (not that I don't), I noticed she had the qualities beyond beauty that would matter in the long run.
So, the main take away is this:
It's not the six pack abs, the killer dance moves, the sophisticated & charming conversation, the six figure bank accounts, or the fancy kitchen cabinets. What really matters is if you can you fix a corn dryer with a piece scrap iron and a cable winch. That's what women want! | |
